Gear Changing Down (Manual Transmission)
Changing down to a lower gear should be done smoothly and at the correct speed to maintain vehicle control, improve engine efficiency, and prevent unnecessary wear on the transmission.
Procedure
1. Check the rear-view mirror and any relevant side mirrors to assess traffic conditions behind you.
2. Release the accelerator (throttle) smoothly.
3. Brake, if necessary, to reduce your speed to one that is appropriate for the lower gear and prevailing road conditions.
4. All braking should be completed before selecting a lower gear.
5. Remove your right foot completely from the brake pedal (motor vehicles only).
6. Position your right foot over the accelerator pedal without applying pressure (motor vehicles only).
7. Fully depress the clutch pedal (or pull in the clutch lever on a motorcycle).
8. Select the appropriate lower gear.
9. Return your right hand to the correct steering position immediately after completing the gear change (light motor vehicles only).
10. Begin releasing the clutch slowly and smoothly to the contact point.
11. Apply the accelerator progressively while continuing to release the clutch.
12. Release the clutch completely and remove your foot (or hand) from the clutch control.
Important Notes Controlling Speed on Descents
When travelling downhill,vehicle speed may increase significantly without using the accelerator. If continuous braking becomes necessary:
1. Brake to reduce your speed to an appropriate level.
2. Select a lower gear suitable for the new speed.
3. Release the clutch smoothly and continue driving.
4. Repeat the procedure if additional speed reduction is required.
This method helps maintain better vehicle control and prevents excessive acceleration.
Avoid Using Gears as Brakes
A lower gear should not be used as a substitute for the service brake.
Always reduce speed with the brake first before selecting a lower gear.
